Typically sourced from past mining work in Mexico, high quality Velvet or Peacock Obsidian can be tough to find, but proves rewarding to work with and beautiful to polish. It appears like normal black obsidian under a thin layer of host rock, but once uncovered you should see folds of shimmering, velvety color, from cool tones like green, blue, and purple, to warmer notes of yellow and red. Most pieces are large enough to be cross cut or slabbed for cabochons, and any host rock on the surface will be removed after a short tumble with some light grit (80 or 220 grit). To confirm the iridescent flash in it's raw form, we recommend holding a bright LED along the surface at an angle.
