More about rock tumbling:
The process of rock tumbling consists of four stages of finer and finer abrasive grit that slowly smooths down natural imperfections in the rocks until the surface exhibits a rounded, clean finish. The fifth stage is all about bringing out that mirror-like luster!
We recommend using stones between 5 and 7 on the Mohs Hardness Scale. Examples include:
- Agate
- Jasper
- Quartz (e.g. amethyst)
- Chalcedony
- Apatite
- Obsidian
Note: Each stage is packed and measured by hand in individual bags for each stage.
Tumbling Stage 1: Silicon Carbide (Grit 80)
• The coarsest grit used in the first stage of the tumbling process rounds and shapes your rocks.
Tumbling Stage 2: Silicon Carbide (Grit 220)
• 220 Silicon Carbide is a finer grit that is used to remove the scratches left by the coarser 80 Silicon Carbide (from Stage 1).
Tumbling Stage 3: Silicon Carbide (Grit 600)
• 600 Silicon Carbide is an even finer abrasive than the 220 Silicon Carbide that is used to remove the microscopic scratches left from the prior stage.
Tumbling Stage 4: Micro Aluminum Oxide (1-3 micron size)
• Our Micro Aluminum Oxide Polish is used in the Tumbling Stage 4 to finally impart the mirror like shine upon your rocks.
Tumbling Stage 5: Burnishing (Cleaning)
• We recommend a "half day" cleaning cycle (about 7 hours) using Borax. This helps remove any leftover "film" from the Polishing Powder from Stage 4.
